Your Highs and Lows

About a time when someone has been generous to you

2 Corinthians 9:7

Philippians 4:10-20

Acts 4:32-35

Paul was a Church planter who went from place to place meeting people, telling them about Jesus and establishing churches. God had some special people help Paul in his work. Philippians 4:10 – 20 is part of a letter of thanks that Paul wrote to his helpers.

·        Who helped Paul early in his travels as a missionary? And how did they help him? (The Philippians gave him money so that he could travel to various places and tell others about Jesus)

The Philippians saw the importance of Paul’s work and happily gave him money to help him with his work in other places. Just like Paul and his helpers, we are called to be missionaries, and help others to be missionaries too.

·        How do you feel about giving money to the church? Are you happy to do it? Or consider it a chore?

2 Corinthians 9:7 says that we should be cheerful givers.

·        What do you think this is saying? (That we shouldn’t give just because we have to, but because we believe in the cause and we want to help too.)

Giving money to the church helps to resource the people of the church to do God’s work and when we work together, more can be done. If we are generous and share the resources that God has given us then we can achieve more together, individually and as a community.

Have a conversation about what you as a family give to the church as an offering. Use the tools provided in worship this week (and by email) to decide how much you will continue or start to give and set up a way of doing it. Also talk about other ways that you can be generous in your community.

All hold hands, and choose someone to start. When it is your turn, say your own prayer then squeeze the person’s hand on your right. And then at the end, have a moments silence as you listen for God, then all say Amen together.

You may like to use this prayer as a start.

Dear awesome God, Thank you for the things you have given me ……………… Please help me to be a good steward of the things that you have blessed me with. Help me to be generous with my money and show me ways that I can bless others with what I have. Amen

May God the Father prepare your journey, guide your footsteps, watch over you and bless you on every road that you will travel.
