It is estimated that in the world today there are many more slaves than in previous times in history. Human-trafficking is a huge industry, estimated to be worth approximately $150 billion!

·        What is human trafficking and slavery?

o   The UN definition is “The recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring or receipt of persons, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation”

Traffickers often exploit the desire for a better life amongst the most vulnerable by making promises of a new start, education, financial security and a better life for their family. Human-trafficking and slavery is a huge global problem which needs heroes and ordinary people to solve. To stop it we need to make people aware, exercise our power as consumers and ask businesses and governments to take action.

·        How is trafficking and slavery different to child labour and child work?

o   Worst Forms of Child Labour jeopardize the physical, mental or moral well-being of a child, either because of its nature or because of the hazardous conditions in which it is carried out.

o   Child Work is when children help out on their family farm or business but it does not impact their education, health, emotional and physical development. Much like a child in a western country helps out around the house or in a family business; children in developing countries do the same.

o   Trafficking and Slavery involves people being bought and sold for sexual exploitation, forced labour, street crime, domestic servitude or even the sale of organs and human sacrifice. Men, women and children are trafficked within their own countries and across international borders. Trafficking affects every continent and every country.

Moses was used by God to free the Israelites who were being held and used as slaves in ancient Egypt. His journey was long and painful – it started when he was a baby in a basket and didn’t end until after he has led them through the Red Sea.

·        How do you think the Israelites felt when they were slaves? And when they were finally freed?

William Wilberforce was another man in the 1800’s who helped people to understand that slavery was wrong and helped end the transatlantic slave trade and make slavery illegal in England.

·        What consumer campaign did William Wilberforce run? Was it successful?

o   Wilberforce asked people to stop putting sugar in their tea as it came from the misery and labour of slaves. People stopped using sugar and sugar businesses had to listen to consumer demand and change their practices.

Over the world many children are still trafficked to pick and produce tea, coffee, chocolate and cotton (amongst many other things). By buying certified chocolate, tea and coffee (with the Fairtrade, UTZ or Rainforest Alliance certification mark on it), we can do the same as Wilberforce - If we purchase fir products, we can help bring about the end to trafficking.

·        How does buying certified products help us to be heroes?

·        How can you be a slavery hero today?
