Celebrating our service

Disciples of Christ are called to service by our Lord and serve in the power of the Spirit, as part of the mission of God.  Our service is therefore a spiritual response to God and a way that we participate in God's work in the world.  To assist in our service, the following prayer guide is offered.

1          We celebrate God’s goodness

Read Psalm 92:1-5

Read Psalm 103:1 - 5

In your prayers thank God for the things that you have seen and experienced through Emmanuel during this year.  You may wish to thank him for people, opportunities you have been given to serve and use your gifts, times when others have served you, the outreach of the congregation to those in need, opportunities that we have had to share God’s love and the good news of Jesus Christ.

Take time to write down what you are thankful for.

2          We confess where we have been unfaithful

Read Psalm 32:1 – 5

Read Psalm 130:1 - 4

Confess where you:

  • have failed to serve as he has called you,
  • have hidden and wasted the talents he has given you,
  • have ignored the opportunities to meet the needs of others,
  • have sought to work and serve in your own strength, instead of the Spirit of God.

Having confessed your sin, wash your hands as a sign that through Jesus Christ you are washed clean and your sin is no longer held against you..

3          We pray for the life of the church in the future

Read Ephesians 6:13-18

Read Philippians 4:6, 7

Already plans are being made and thoughts are turning towards the future.  In faithfulness, we pray that they will be aligned with God’s plan for our congregation.

Pray for:

  • the leaders of each of our groups and activities
  • thank God for their willingness to serve
  • seek God’s inspiration for their ongoing leadership
  • the planning that will be undertaken for the future
  • the members of each group and activity
  • new members and leaders to come on board
  • the way so many people embody their faith in service through the congregation
  • the way so many people embody their faith in service outside the congregation
  • people to be mobilised to stretch themselves in serving others

Use the notice sheet as a daily prompt to pray for the different activities of our church.

4          Dream forward to the future

Read Acts 2:17

Read Ezra 8:22, 23

Allow yourself to dream and vision what is possible at Emmanuel.

Commit yourself to embodying your faith in service.  God calls each person to service, what is yours?
